Mood Board

I decided to do a mood board because they are not just limited to visual subjects but serve as a visual tool to quickly inform others of the overall feel of what im trying to achieve. The genre of music my mood board is based around is rock and the pictures that i picked fit with the audience profile. I was able to put this mood board together because of experience and research with the genre of music i am using for my magazine. The image of the girl with the blond and black hair are how the current listeners of rock look like I no her personally which gives me an edge because i not only have my knowledge of rock and fashion but i also have my friends personal views on the matter.
I also added brands such as candyskull and converse because these brands are worn by my target audience.
Rock doesn't just extend to music, T.V shows like the "mighty boosh" and the "film scott pilgrim" are popular with my target audience for there collaboration of music, art and film.
Most people that listen to rock music see there body as a blank canvas and that it can be used to show creativity and deepness they would also do this by tattooing on themselves there favourite bands lyrics from a good song. The sheer poignancy of a lyric by rock bands have caused people to to keep it permanently in their lives via a tattoo.

Music Magazine Double Page Analysis

This double page spread denotes Paramore in a medium close up looking at the camera. The band is edited to look black and white expect from vocalist Haley Williams who is in colour who stands out alot. What also stands out alot is the actual bands name on the left hand side of the page in yellow almost looking like tiger stripes.
The first paragraph is in blue and looks unique on the page because nothing else is in blue. The sign paramore matches Haleys hair so isn't as unique as the first paragraphs colour which stands out.
There is text on both sides of the page, on the bottom left and the top right. The background behind the band seems to be a city block and they look like there sitting on the staircase of that tower block.
The band are looking directly at the camera and sitting very causally. The band are sitting behind all the text on the page but none of the text is infront of Haley Willams just the rest of the band.
The photograph and the background cover the whole magazine double page spread.

What this magazine double page spread connotes to me is that Haley Williams is the most important person in the band she is the Vocalist and the only girl in the band. The double page spread connotes this to me because Haley Willams is the only person in colour and because she is the vocalist also she is sitting in the front row of the band.
Haley is the only one in colour this represents her importance in the band and that she is the bands face. Her ginger hair makes her stand out like Gerald it seems likely that the vocalists in the band try to stand out the most because there the most recognisable because they sing the songs. The colour for the rest of the band is black and white and almost like they dont matter and that the spot light is always on Haley Williams.
The fact that she is the vocalist of the band might not be the only reason why she stands out the most in this double page spread, she is also the only girl in the band which gives her and edge because there are not much rock successful bands with girl members in them. Rock is a very male dominated genre of music so to Haley Williams will get alot of attention because shes successful and she is part of a rock band.

The facial expressions on the bands faces look pretty normal. The band seem very casual in this photo. There cloths look like there everyday to day cloths for what kind of band there in.

This doulbe page spread would attract male and female readers because Haley Williams is pretty and there arnt many successful bands who get featured in magazines so it would appeal to males. It would appeal to females because she is successful and they want to be like her and know its possible for girls to get signed to a record label. Theres a gap this genre of music for more female bands and Haley Williams can be inspirational for those girls who want to start a well known successful band.

Music Magazine Analysis Front Cover

This magazine denotes a medium long shot of My Chemical Romance vocalist Gerald Way who is looking directly at the camera. Behind Gerald is a blue background which covers the whole of the magazine background. Gerald is standing in the middle of the magazine holding his red hair back infront of Gerald are the masthead, advertisting for posters, three coverlines and main coverlines. The mast head of NME is a simple white font. The coverlines are white and black and the advertisting posters box has tiny versions of them so the audicne can see whats on offer. The barcode is on the bottom left with the price.

NME is the masthead of this magazine and stands for the new music express. It is a very popular music magazine in the United Kingdom. The masthead for the magazine is a plain white which connotes simplicity. The mast head really stands out when infront of Gerald but when behind the light blue screen it doesn't really stand out as much.
The masthead seems to work well for this magazine though because it looks modern and clean and sometimes the simplest fonts work well for a magazine.

The man in the magazine is called Gerald. Gerald Way is a vocalist for a band called My Chemical Romance. There is only one band member featuring in this magazine which means he is having a personal interview which is all about him or that he is the face of the band and that he is trying to promote them because of his red hair he is more recognisable and stands out more on this magazine front page. The read hair could connote the colour of blood because he is in a rock band and some lyrics to some of his songs are about pain and love which could represent why his hair is that colour because love is usually associated with the colour red and pain doesn't have a colour but when someone is in pain they draw blood and blood is the colour red.

Geralds facial expression looks like he is annoyed and what backs this up is the main coverline which says "Gerard sees red" . The word "sees red" refers to bullfighting. It is well known that a Matador usses a red cape to intimidate the bull. When the bull gets agitated it charges the Madator but it tends to aim for the cape rather than the man. Seeing red refers to the situation of being so angry your anger crontrols you and causes you to be extremely enraged. Which brings me back to the main coverline because it also says "We loath what Goth has become". In my opinion Gerald is refering to himself as the bull and Goth as the Madator and the Goth has agitated Gerald so much he is venting his feeling about the situation in a magazine interview.
The fact that he says we also shows the whole band back him up on what he is saying.
The blue background connotes a calm blue feel to it but it clashes with Geralds fiery red hair and then clashes even more when you read the coverlines because it shows the red hair represents his anger.

There is only one coverline in black and its near the top left of the page and says "Suade come back interview" which is a pretty basic coverline for a music magazine most of this magazine doesn't break much conventions and sticks to pretty basic language and font. Either NME feels like its audience is pretty huge and that they can keep it basic for some issues or that they want there magazine to look like that because it looks modern and its safe.

The other coverline says "NME awards 2011 amazing new line up revealed" with all the bands performing beneath.
Even though the magazine is pretty basic this would make people want to buy it because it features who will be performing at the NME awards and alot of people attend those awards so this issue would get alot of readers.
All of the fonts on the page are san serif this connotes how modern the magazine is along with its white and black colours.
The magazines colour scheme also represent a sky because of the blue background representing the sky and the white coverlines representing clouds. This helps make Gerald stand out more because of his facial expression and hair.

This magazine front cover would attract a wide audience of people going or interested in the NME awards but it will mostly attract girls and Goths who want to know what Geralds problem is with them.
The magazine would attract girls because Gerald looks like he is posing aswell as he is angry and My Chemical romance has a big female fan base because of how they look and how they appeal to there audience.

Introduction

For my coursework  I will be doing a textual analysis of a music magazine front cover, analysis of a music magazine double page spread, audience research questionnaire, audience research results and i will also be making a magazine front cover, contents page and a  double page spread.
