Photos I Took

I took more photos because i wanted more choice of photos to pick from for my magazine.

I used a Canon Powershot SX120 IS to take these photos. The camera has 10.0 megapixels. It was farely easy to use but I didn't get to take my photos outside but that wont affect  my work because i wont be using the background for these photos.

Audience Feed Back

Not everyone replied to my question about my magazine pages so I asked some people in person and most of the feed back I got about my magazines were good. Most disagreements were about my contents page and if I used enough photos to show what my magazine is featuring. Some liked that I only used one photo and would buy my magazine so I was pleased with my feed back apart from some comments on my contents page.

Drafts

Music magazine front cover layout 1 features a teenager breaking glass and the glass breaks through out the magazine front page.
Front cover layout 2 features a musican playing guitar.

Front cover layout number 3 features a band and one serious band member one normal one and a playful one who is hiding behind him.
Front cover layout number 4 is the one I used because I decided not to go for a full band or a long shot of my models I wanted to stick to conventions of a medium long shot because I find this more effective and you can see the models facial expression and more attention would be on the him and the coverlines.

Layout 1 of my contents features a singer on a podium singing.
Contents page layout 2 is of someone smashing a guitar on the ground.

Layout 3 is the one I picked for my contents page. It features a model with a gas mask on and there is a scratched backgroud behind him. I picked this one because I wanted it to appeal to my heavy metal audience who read this magazine and this my contents page shows anger and a musician playing a guitar which appeal to them.

Layout 4 for my contents pages features numerous photos of people and sticks to conventions of numerous pictuers of contents page.

I only did one double page layout because I knew exacly what i wanted to do for my double page spread. It features someone drawn on the wall in different colours and the interview would be written on the wall aswell but i changed it and extended the floor in the original photo and put the interview on the floor.

Interview

The Silver Foxes are a band signed to Tin Robot Records and I managed to get an online interview with one of there band members because I no him. Lee gave me insight on the music industry and what kind of magazines that he would like to be featured in. I may be useing this interview for my magazine. In the magazines Q and NME i noticed that a major part of them were interview's this allows the reader to get an insight into their favourite bands and what they go through. Bands usually have stories of what they did to get to the top and this appeals to the readers because most of them would be trying to start bands of there own and  it can give them hope that they one day could also be signed to a record label.

Tin robot records believes in building a foundation of talent. The music business can be notoriously fickle and They believe that new talent is being seriously neglected as the industry focuses its efforts on high-return, tried and tested artists. Tin Robot want to invest in new music and help bands develop without them footing the bill.

Lee Hayes. Guitarist and back up vocals.
These are other bands that Tin Robot Records have signed to there label. As you can see they are all bands and there music is most likely influenced by rock .

Taking The Photos

I made other arrangements to take my photos independently because we did not have enough time for everyone take there photos in class and all the cameras were booked. I took my pictures outside because I wanted my photos to have high key lighting to I can have more control on how much I darken the photos.

I used a Nikon D3100 to take my photo it has 12.1 megapixels so my photos should come out in a good quality. The weather made everything looked washed out but it is something i can edit on photoshop. I found this camera easier to focus than the last camera i used which was the Canon EOS 400D with 10.1 megapixels (I used the Canon to make my college magazine).

Audience Research

In this song “Gives you hell” by the all American rejects, Tyson Ritter is singing about different lifestyles that he and his ex-grilfriend are now living. The fact the song is set in the suburbs is very odd when he is a rock star and has a rebellious personality. It seems a strange location to set a video when the suburbs represent a place of peace and quite and the cereal packet family consisting of a married couple with 2.5 children and a dog. This clashes with rocks loud and non conformist attitude.

His ex-girlfriend now lives with someone else and they have a typical American home and don’t share a bed probably because they are young and not married and may be looked down in the community they are living in. Tyson Ritter shares a bed next door to them with his new girlfriend with there tiger stripped sheets and retro looking room and house, while his ex-girlfriend is living with her new boyfriend in there very normal looking house. What I think the different in houses represents is that even though Tyson is living in the suburbs he will not conform to what others see as the norm, he will do things his own way.
In one of the verses he draws attention to her lifestyle that she keeps:

“I wake up every evening with
A big smile on my face and it
Never feels out of place and your
Still probably working at a 9 to
5 pace”

These lyrics from the song sum up her daily routine and any other working Americans who lives in the suburbs. Tyson Ritter being a rock star does not have to do this routine and has the money to sustain a life in the suburbs with out working hard for it.
The pre-corus of the lyrics are very deceiving because he sings about missing his ex and the loss of her but then flat out says that his lying. So he is teasing her.

The lyrics ‘Where’s your picket fence love’ makes perfect reference to the suburbs and the fence they put up around the lawn. Picket fence is also an analogy for perfect house/life. He is mocking her because he doesn’t see her desire to have these things which is probably why she broke up with him because he doesn’t represent the husband marital type but he has proved he can have them if he wanted them because he moved in right next to them.

In conclusion one of the most controversial music genres in the industry is rock and corresponds with youth culture that is constantly being told what to do by elder people and constantly being told of for being too loud, too uncultured, and too vulgar. This links in with the video well because we have the rock star who is very rebbilous and the surburbian husbad who follows what society sees as right. This music video has helped me understand my audience more and there attuitude towards society and socities attutide towards them. Most importantly this music video has helped me understand why rock appeals to some of my target audience and how i can make my magazine give across a this message.
